People often ask if olives grow well in pots—they sure do! So here are photos of trees in pots collected from here and there. Just one caveat, notice that all these olives are thriving in pots but they are also thriving outside! We get a lot of inquiries about keeping olive trees in pots and indoors…just don’t! We are against torturing olive trees—just like you wouldn’t grow an apple or a peach tree inside, you shouldn’t try growing your olive trees in your kitchen or living room. On the internet or in fancy design magazines you might see beautiful images of olive trees apparently thriving indoors—designers love the Mediterranean look these days—but most of those trees are there for the photo shoot, and then they go home, i.e. back outside. Olive trees typically don’t thrive without adequate light and the normal fluctuations of daily temperatures. Living inside within a temperature controlled house of apartment they will develop diseases such as scale or start dropping leaves from low light conditions. Of course if you have a sunny atrium that can cool down at night you may have the perfect conditions for growing trees in pots—so forget everything you just read. 🙂
